Electromagnetic fields yielding plane symmetric metrics in higher-dime
nsional spacetimes are exhausted and classified. It is shown that thes
e EM fields must fall into one of the following two cases: (i) F-it =
F-iz = 0, i = 1, ..., n; (ii)F-tz = 0. We give the general solution to
the Einstein-Maxwell equations in higher dimensions corresponding to
electromagnetic fields of case (ii) with F-it = F-iz, which covers all
even-dimensional spacetimes as well as a subcase of odd-dimensional s
pacetimes.
