Abstract
A review is given on the pathophysiology of the transport of solutes a nd fluid during continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Special att ention is paid to the assessment of peritoneal permeability in individ ual patients, its inter- and intraindividual variability, the effect o f systemic disease, some regulatory mechanisms, and alterations observ ed during long-term continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
