MAGNETOMETER BASED ON ATOMIC COHERENCE AND POSSIBLE APPLICATION TO THE SEARCH FOR P-VIOLATING AND T-VIOLATING PERMANENT ELECTRIC-DIPOLE MOMENTS OF ATOMS
M. Fleischhauer et Mo. Scully, MAGNETOMETER BASED ON ATOMIC COHERENCE AND POSSIBLE APPLICATION TO THE SEARCH FOR P-VIOLATING AND T-VIOLATING PERMANENT ELECTRIC-DIPOLE MOMENTS OF ATOMS, Quantum and semiclassical optics, 7(3), 1995, pp. 297-305
A new approach to the experimental search for P and T violating perman
ent electric dipole moments (EDMS) in atoms is proposed. The high disp
ersion of a phase coherent atomic medium at a point of electromagnetic
ally induced transparency is used to detect linear Starkshifts associa
ted with an atomic EDM in a highly sensitive interferometric measureme
nt. Possible noise sources are analysed and estimates are given for th
e device sensitivity.
