Abstract
Dielectric response functions for stishovite, coesite, cu-quartz and s ilacalite, obtained from electron energy loss spectra are studied and compared. The data for stishovite conforms well to simple dielectric t heory for an insulator. However the behaviour of the other materials, including the relative insensitivity of the plasmon peak to density, i s less well explained either on this basis or using more elaborate mod els based on Maxwell Garnett or Clausius-Mossotti effective medium the ory. Possible improvements to effective medium theory are discussed.
