Abstract
This case of therapeutic failure using hypnosis was with a 32-year-old computer programmer seeking treatment because of migraine headaches. With hypnosis his headaches diminished 50%. During the hypnosis, howev er, the client recollected memories of his father, which brought up hi s own murderous rage at age 16. This traumatic memory resulted in the client's abandoning therapy. Reflections on what I might do differentl y if I saw a similar client today included being more respectful of hi s history, proceeding more slowly, paying more attention to my ''Bould er Model'' countertransference, recognizing his need for the symptom, attempting to calibrate my therapy to his psychological style, and tea ching self-soothing techniques.
