Ma. Anderson et al., FRACTURES AND DISLOCATIONS OF THE RACING GREYHOUND .1., The Compendium on continuing education for the practicing veterinarian, 17(6), 1995, pp. 779
Greyhounds sustain many fractures and dislocations that are uncommon i
n other breeds of dogs. The counterclockwise direction of racing, the
repetitive nature of racing, and track conditions predispose greyhound
s to many atypical injuries. Most injuries that occur as a result of r
acing involve, or are distal to, the carpus and tarsus. The repetitive
nature of racing predisposes greyhounds to stress fractures that are
not seen routinely in nonworking dogs. A better understanding of injur
ies sustained by racing greyhounds gives the practitioner an appreciat
ion of the unique nature of these injuries and how they affect the dog
s that participate in this increasingly popular sport.
