Investigation of the effect of nanosecond electromagnetic pulses on th
e two-pulse, three-pulse, and long-lived three-pulse photon echoes in
LaF3 : Pr3+ was carried out. A strong decrease in the intensity of ech
o signals depending on the time of electromagnetic-pulse insertion was
observed. Experimental results may be qualitatively interpreted assum
ing that the current pulse through the strip evaporated onto the surfa
ce of the sample creates an electromagnetic field in the sample, causi
ng, first, the shift of the energy levels of Pr3+ ions and, second, th
e transverse ultrasonic field effecting the echo-intensity change.
