The excitation dynamics and relaxation characteristics of nile blue in
polyvinyl alcohol are studied using the time-delayed four-wave-mixing
technique at cryogenic temperatures over its absorption linewidth. Th
e roles of electronic transition, nuclear vibration, and the phonon si
de-band in the observed decay characteristics of the signal are discus
sed.
