Clindamycin is active against most anaerobes, most gram-positive cocci
(except enterococci and methicillin-resistant staphylococci), and cer
tain protozoa. Metronidazole is a bactericidal antibiotic with strong
activity against most anaerobes and certain parasites. Both drugs have
excellent bioavailability and accomplish good levels in most tissues.
Their pharmacology, mechanisms of action and resistance, spectrum of
activity, adverse reactions, and expansion of clinical uses are discus
sed in this article.
