A new leaf species of Nothofagaceae, Nothofagus plicata, from southern
and southwestern continental Australia is described. N. plicata has p
licate vernation and is therefore considered to be a deciduous species
. This provides the first macrofossil evidence for deciduous elements
on mainland Australia in the Eocene, as well as the previously missing
macrofossil evidence for Nothofagus forests which palynologists have
suggested existed in this region at that time.
