Piezoelectric fibre optic reflection spectroelectrochemistry (SEC), a
new technique of SEC in combination with quartz crystal microbalance (
QCM) detection by using a fibre optic bundle, is proposed. The simulta
neous measurements have been performed during the growth of polynaphth
ylamine film on the platinum electrode of the QCM in acetonitrile. Res
ults show that this technique can provide substantial in situ informat
ion of the electrochemical process from SEC and QCM. This novel techni
que is recommended to find wider applications in the electrochemical s
tudy on surface phenomena. In addition, a pH fibre optic sensor based
on the polynaphthylamine film as a sensitive membrane is developed.
