Rate constants for the one-electron cathodic reduction of tris(acetyla
cetonato)chromium(III) were determined by pulse polarographic and cycl
ic voltammetric techniques at 23 degrees C in 10 organic solvents (ace
tonitrile, propylene carbonate, gamma-butyrolactone, N,N;dimethylforma
mide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, dimethylsulphoxide, N,N-diethylformamide,
hexamethylphosphoric triamide, N-methylformamide and formamide). It h
as been shown that the observed solvent dependence of the rate constan
t is mostly caused by solvent relaxation dynamics, but the donor-accep
tor interactions between solvent and solute should not be neglected.
