The optical harmonic mixing capability of a high speed 1.5 mu m DFB la
ser is demonstrated at 38GHz. A 700Mbit/s digital NPZ signal combined
with a 9.5GHz local oscillator modulates the laser and upconverts the
frequency to 38GHz. A bit error rate (BER) of 10(-9) after IF amplific
ation is obtained with -18dBm at 700Mbit/s for a received DC optical p
ower of 0.6dBm. The sensivity at 38GHz for the carrier is -46.5dBm.
