Abstract
Transmission at 40Gbit/s over 140km of dispersion-shifted fibre has be en demonstrated. An optical sensitivity of -28.5dBm (BER = 10(-9)) was achieved at the optimum operating wavelength of 1556nm and a power pe nalty of <1dB was obtained for 1554-1557.5nm wavelengths. The two opti cally demultiplexed 20Gbit/s channels exhibited negligible difference in sensitivity.
