Abstract
The power and polarisation dependence of modulation instability were e xperimentally investigated and used to obtain a novel, simple and accu rate method for the measurement of Kerr coefficient in optical fibres. New results on dispersion shifted fibres are reported, giving n(2) = 2.64 x 10(-20) m(2)/W at 1553nm (linear polarisation).
