BERNARD-MARANGONI CONVECTION IN SMALL ASPECT RATIO CONTAINERS

Convection in system with small aspect ratio is discussed when thermoc apillarity and gravity effects are present. Recent experiments in smal l containers show many interesting features that can be interpreted in terms of bifurcations with symmetry. In the present paper we report e xperimental and theoretical results in square and cylindrical vessel. Particular attention is payed to the characterization of the flow in s quare containers and to the possibility of rotating waves in a cylindr ical container.
