A new non-merit function based lens design algorithm has been develope
d which combines a quadratic approximation to the individual aberratio
n variations with adaptive aberration central. This results in an incr
ease in the magnitude of the applied parameter changes and a reduction
in the computing load compared to the linear adaptive method. Example
s given verify that the method described can diagnoze specific aberrat
ional problems. This feature, together with the increased magnitude of
the applied parameter changes, enhances the radius of convergence in
computer-aided lens design.
