Abstract
We analyse the Bennett-Wiesner dense quantum coding scheme for non-max imally entangled carriers of information. Our generalization shows tha t the detection scheme proposed by Bennett and Wiesner is optimal even when the entanglement is not perfect. We comment on the optical reali zation of the scheme.
