Chromosomal DNAs of different strains of the taxonomic species Sacchar
omyces unisporus, S. servazzii, S. dairensis and S. castellii were com
pared by CHEF gel electrophoresis. Nine S. unisporus strains are homog
enous for molecular karyotypes. The physiologically different species
S. unisporus and S. servazzii have similar karyotypes and therefore co
mpose one chromosomal complex. According to molecular karyotyping, the
taxonomic species S. dairensis is a heterogenic taxon and apparently
contains several distinct species. Particularly one strain, CBS 6463,
originally designated as Kazachstania viticola (Zubkova, 1971) has a u
nique karyotype pattern.
