Abstract
This article discusses the culturally based social problems caused by a long history of oppression experienced by Hawaiians, the indigenous population of Hawaii. Culturally appropriate prescriptions for empower ment are derived from an analysis of historical and current social pro blems. Current movements to re-establish Motive sovereignty and an ind igenous community-based economy ave described as efforts to help solve these social problems.
