Abstract
Although the texts on parental involvement are frequently written in t erms of neutral, context-free parents, the empirical work outlined bel ow suggests a more complex reality. Listening to women reveals, first, that the parents in parental involvement are gendered, and second, th at they operate within widely differing frameworks of constraints and opportunities which shape their practices.
