Seventeen strains of a hitherto undescribed coryneform bacterium were
encountered in clinical specimens from different patients with mainly
genitourinary infections. Biochemical reactions of these bacteria incl
uded strong beta-glucuronidase activity as the most characteristic fea
ture. Chemotaxonomic as well as molecular genetic investigations clear
ly revealed that the newly recognized bacteria represent a Cornyebacte
rium species for which the name Corynebacterium glucuronolyticum sp. n
ov. is proposed.
