The oxidation of phase pure ZnS in the wurtzite and sphalerite modific
ation upon heating in an air flow has been studied by simultaneous the
rmogravimetry-differential thermal analysis and in-situ X-ray diffract
ion at high temperature (high temperature camera and electron synchrot
ron). The oxidation of wurtzite starts at higher temperature, ZnO is f
ormed without any detectable side or intermediate products. Sphalerite
oxidation starts at lower temperature, ZnSO4 and Zn3O(SO4)(2) are for
med intermediately in side reactions yielding finally ZnO.
