G. Gassner et al., CLINICAL-TRIAL OF 2 OTITIS DRUGS (CONTAIN ING LINDANE AND FREE OF LINDANE) FOR THE TREATMENT OF OTITIS-EXTERNA PARASITARIA IN THE DOG AND CAT, Kleintierpraxis, 40(5), 1995, pp. 361
Otitis externa parasitaria, caused by otodectes cynotis, occurs quite
often in dogs and cats, though it happens more often in the cat. Two d
ifferent medications - one with a lindane component and the other one
lindane-free - were tested in 65 cases for their clinical efficacy. Th
e study showed that the lindane containing otitis medication did not h
ave a better effect (within the limited therapy period of 6 days) in t
he treatment of otitis externa parasitaria. In the cat, both medicatio
ns did not lead to complete recovery, but within the limited investiga
tion period, a marked improvement was noticed. Also without lindane, o
titis caused by otodectes can be treated with approximately equally go
od results, if the treatment is maintained over a sufficient period of
time. Evaluation of the lindane plasma concentration did not show a s
ignificant increase in the lindane serum level in the major part of th
e population after treatment with the lindane containing medication.
