The interaction of anthracycline antibiotics and platinum-containing d
rugs with tissue thiol groups (SH-groups) has been studied in intact r
ats and mice. There has been established the lowering of SH-group cont
ent within the first hours after drug administration. The extent of an
titumor drugs interaction with SH-groups correlated with organ specifi
city. Platinum-containing drugs possessed high extent of SH-group inac
tivation in renal tissue, whereas anthracycline antibiotics, adriablas
tin in particular, exerted more pronounced effect in myocardial tissue
. The administration of antitumor drugs inhibited glutathion-reductase
activity in blood of animals to a considerable extent, it being an ev
idence of the enhancement of peroxidation, the diminishing of glutathi
on synthesis and consequently, of the decline of organism resistance t
o toxic influence.
