Intravenous pyelography (IVP) with pneumoperitoneum (PP) was undertake
n in normal and induced nephrotic goats. In normal goats, the techniqu
e provided visualization of both the kidneys, renal pelvis, ureter and
urinary bladder at 10 min post-administration of sodium iothalamate (
70%). In mercuric chloride- and oxytetracycline-induced nephrosis in g
oats, the urinary tract could not be visualized even 60 min post-admin
istration of dye indicating severe failure of renal excretory function
. However, in gentamicin-abused goats, renal excretory function was no
t significantly altered owing to a very mild renal damage. It was conc
luded that IVP with PP could be a dependable diagnostic lest for varie
d degree of renal insufficiency in ruminants.
