The kinetics of emulsion copolymerization of butyl acrylate (BA) with
beta-acryloxyethyl maleate (AOEM), acrylonitrile (AA), and methacrylic
acid (MAA) was studied. The effect of comonomers on the reaction rate
depends on the reaction conditions. The copolymerization of butyl acr
ylate with AOEM yields a polymer containing unreacted C=C bonds predom
inantly in the maleic group. The presence of MAA increases the probabi
lity of radical abstraction in the aqueous phase, creates conditions f
or the gel effect, and increases the degree of unsaturation of the pol
ymer. The degree of unsaturation also depends on the diene concentrati
on and the reaction temperature. The rate constants of the copolymeriz
ation reaction are determined and a correlation is established between
the reaction kinetics and the properties of copolymers.
