In this essay, based on a keynote address, the author calls for schola
rs of higher education to join in efforts to create a new idea of the
university suited to the twenty-first century. She uses her experience
s in working to improve the status of women as an example of the ways
universities can and must change. Then, considering the contemporary a
cademic ethos, she challenges scholars of higher education to improve
their own efforts at building a new, more inclusive community of schol
ars for the next century.
