Abstract
Metallothioneins have been extensively studied in many different eukar yotes where they sequester, and hence detoxify, excess amounts of cert ain metal ions. However, the precise functions of many of these molecu les are not fully understood. This article reviews literature concerni ng their namesakes in prokaryotes.
