Pyridine-utilizing microorganisms were isolated from soil using accumu
lative cultivation, They were identified as Arthrobacter crystallopoie
tes VKM Ac-1334D and Rhodococcus opacus VKM Ac-1333D. Gas chromatograp
hy and mass spectroscopy showed that the former strain growing on pyri
dine produces intermediate 3-hydroxypyridine and 2,3- and 2,6-dihydrox
ypyridines, while the latter strain yields 2-hydroxypyridine and 2,6-d
ihydroxypyridine as intermediate products. In addition, these strains
perform specific ring cleavage leading to 5-amino-2-oxopent-4-enoic ac
id and 4-carbamoylbut-3-enoic acid, respectively.
