We present the results of secondary-electron cascade calculations of s
everal systems and determine the relative yield due to these metal ele
ctron cascades depending on the nature of the electron emitting proces
s and its energy. We conclude that for slightly charged systems such a
s He2+ and Ne2+ the cascade emission can account for 60% of the total
electron yield, while it is irrelevant for highly charged species such
as Ar12+ when subsurface neutralization is not included.
