Seventy-seven W UMa-type systems to I = 18 mag in one of the 21 fields
of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) have been asse
ssed in terms of utility for extraction of astrophysical information f
rom time-independent data such as colors, periods, maximum magnitudes,
and variability amplitudes, with special attention to limitations whi
ch might affect analysis of data in the final OGLE catalog, expected t
o contain more than 1000 contact binaries.
