Abstract
After reviewing the historical context of mass point grid spectral tec hniques, we proceed to describe the principles of operation and parts making up the Mass point Geopotential Modelling (mgm) system, and the way this system was used to perform the numerical test inversion exper iment of the Subcommission ''Numerical and Approximation Methods''. We report on this experiment, describing the method and software used, d etails of the processing sequence, a description of the hardware and s oftware environment the work was done in, and some of the statistics o f the inversion results.
