Decabenzylferrocene reacts with acetyl chloride in the presence of Al2
Cl6 to form Deca(4-acetylbenzyl)ferrocene Fe[C-5-(CH2C6H4C(O)CH3)(5)](
2) (2). The X-ray structure confirms the all-para-substitution of the
ten benzylligands by the acetyl group. 2 crystallizes in the space gro
up P2(1)/n with a = 1479.8(3) pm, b = 1700.9(4) pm, c = 1618.7(8) pm,
beta = 89.99(2)degrees and V = 4074(2) X 10(-30) m(3). The final refin
ement resulted in R = 0.0936 for 3983 observed reflections with F-o gr
eater than or equal to 2 sigma(F-o).
