A hydrogen storage vanadium-based solid solution alloy V0.85Ti0.10Fe0.
05 has been synthesised through a new route involving solid state diff
usion. For the diffusion, a specific temperature-time profile has been
determined, this corresponds to 30 degrees C (30 degrees C min(-1)) -
-> 700 degrees C (12 h); 1.5 degrees C min(-1) --> 900 degrees C (36 h
); 2.5 degrees C min(-1) --> 30 degrees C. The structural characterisa
tion of the alloy has been carried out through XRD and electron diffra
ction techniques, the compositional analysis has been done by applying
the EDAX technique. These investigations reveal the alloy lattice to
be b.c.c. type solid solution with a = 3.042 Angstrom, which is in acc
ordance with the lattice parameter a = 3.046 Angstrom determined from
Vegard's law and average compositions correspond to the envisaged stoi
chiometry. The formation of the alloy has also been checked through hy
drogenation-dehydrogenation behaviour.
