The synthesis of single-phase V6O13 and VO2 is described. The method i
nvolves thermal decomposition of NH4VO3 at 0.5 degrees C/min from 50 t
o 500 degrees C in a specially designed reaction chamber. The synthesi
s of V6O13 requires a controlled maximum pressure of 1.5 MPa, and VO2
a sealed chamber. The mean oxidation states were determined by titrati
on to +4.30 for V6O13 and +4.00 for VO2. SEM showed needle-like V6O13
and bulky VO2 grains. Phase-purity was confirmed by XRD.
