The compounds (BH) (CrO3F) (I) and (BH)(2) (Cr3O10) (II), where B=2-me
thylquinoline, have been synthesized. Compound (I) was prepared by rea
ction between chromium (VI) trioxide, hydrogen fluoride and organic ba
se in aqueous medium. Compound (II) was also synthesized in aqueous me
dium from (I) and chromium (VI) trioxide. Compounds (I) and (II) have
been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and electronic spec
tra. The molecular structure of compound (II) was determined by X-ray
crystallography and showed that the C10H9NH+ organic cations are bound
to Cr3O102- anions by significant C-H...O hydrogen-bonding interactio
n. The trichromate ion consists of three nearly tetrahedral CrO4 group
s joined through shared oxygen atoms. The conformation of the Cr3O102-
. anion is different from that of the same anion in Rb2Cr3O10 and dipy
razinium trichromate.
