The hyperfine structure of the (CUF)-C-63 (CII)-I-1-X(1) Sigma(+) tran
sition has been studied by laser-induced fluorescence in the sub-Doppl
er regime. Splittings of the ro-vibronic lines due to interactions wit
h the copper (I = 3/2) and fluorine (I = 1/2) nuclei are observed in t
he P, Q, and R branches. The various contributions arising from magnet
ic dipole and from electric quadrupole interaction are specified. Pari
ty dependent and independent terms are required to explain the dissimi
lar splitting patterns in the Q and the P/R branches. Hyperfine parame
ters for the C state of copper monofluoride are reported for the first
time.
