Time-dependent Beltrami fields are used as the basis of a novel phenom
enological theory of the self-action of electromagnetic pulses in cert
ain nonlinear, isotropic chiral media. A set of coupled nonlinear Schr
odinger equations for slow space-time amplitudes is obtained. The spec
ific features of some soliton solutions in the chosen chiral medium ar
e described and qualitatively compared with those of soliton solutions
in nonlinear, anisotropic, achiral dielectric media. (C) 1995 John Wi
