Abstract
We evaluated determinants of serum lipid and lipoprotein concentration s in 3,106 schoolchildren who participated in a community survey. We a dministered a brief questionnaire and measured height, weight, and fas ting serum lipid concentrations. Family history of hypercholesterolemi a and body mass index were strong determinants of lipid and lipoprotei n levels. Results for specific foods were not always what would have b een expected based on their contents of saturated fatty acids and chol esterol. Our findings point to the need for more detailed studies of t he effects of specific feeds, especially cheeses, milk, and whole grai n bread, on the entire lipoprotein profile of children.
