The results of a study of charm meson production in semileptonic B had
ron decays are presented. Based on a sample of 1.72 million hadronic Z
(0) decays the following product branching ratios (averaged over elect
rons and muons) are obtained: B(b --> D+lX). B(D+ --> K- pi(+) pi(+))
= (1.82 + 0.20 +/- 0.12) x 10-3, B(b --> D(0)lX). B(D-0 --> K- pi(+))
= (2.52 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.17) x 10-3, B(b --> D(+)lX). B(D*(+) --> D-0 p
i(+)). B(D-0 --> K- pi(+)) = (7.53 +/- 0.47 +/- 0.56) x 10(-4), where
the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The results
of a search for the narrow P-wave charmed mesons, (D-J), in semilepton
ic B decays are also reported. Using the decay channels D-J(0) --> Dpi(-), D-J(0) --> D(+) pi(-) and D-J(+) --> D-0 pi(+) we observe a to
tal signal of 44 +/- 8(-7)(+3) D-J(0) and 48 +/- 10(-6)(+3) D-J(+) eve
nts. This is the first evidence for semileptonic B decays to charged P
-wave charm stales. The observed signals also provide evidence for the
production of both pseudovector and tenser P-wave charmed mesons in s
emileptonic B decay. Together these modes are estimated to make up 34
+/- 7% of charmed semileptonic B-0 and B+ decays.
