I. Wirguin et al., KEYHOLE LIMPET HEMOCYANIN CONTAINS GAL(BETA-1-3)-GALNAC DETERMINANTS THAT ARE CROSS-REACTIVE WITH THE T-ANTIGEN, Cancer immunology and immunotherapy, 40(5), 1995, pp. 307-310
Keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) is widely used as a carrier molecule t
o enhance immune responses to administered antigens, and for immunothe
rapy of bladder and renal carcinoma. In the present study we show, usi
ng lectin and antibody binding studies, that native KLH contains Gal(b
eta 1-3)GalNAc-bearing oligosaccharides, and that immunization with KL
H in Lewis rats induces the production of anti-Gal(beta 1-3)GalNAc ant
ibodies. This might explain the beneficial effect of KLH in bladder ca
ncers that express crossreactive Gal(beta 1-3)GalNAc determinants or t
he T antigen.
