A direct time-domain method for analyzing the dynamic response of cont
actable cracks with friction between crack surfaces is proposed. This
method does not only describe the impacting process of crack surfaces,
but also takes into account the static and kinetic friction during th
e process of contact and slip of crack surfaces. The method is an expl
icit one requiring no iteration to simulate the contact condition of t
he crack surfaces. The basic procedures of the method are presented an
d computations are made for the scattering of incident P waves by a cr
ack with static and kinetic friction.
