3,4-Dimethoxyphenol (3,4-DMP) was converted into the corresponding glu
coside in suspension-cultured cells of Coffea arabica. The maximum eff
iciency of glucosylation was attained, more than 40%, within 96 h afte
r the addition of 1 mM 3,4-DMP when cultured in a modified Murashige a
nd Skoog's medium with 5 mu M 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 0.5 m
u M kinetin, The glucoside was identified as 3,4-di-methoxyphenyl beta
-D-glucopyranoside (3,4-DMP glucoside) by H-1-NMR and hydrolysis with
alpha- and beta-glucosidases, As the application of the glycosylation
by C. arabica cells, eleven glycosides were obtained from seven methox
yphenols including 3,4-DMP.
