Abstract
The compound KNb3O8 shows an intense photoluminescence below 200 K.The emission band has its maximum at about 450 nm. It is argued that the emission occurs mainly from the short Nb-O bonds which point into the potassium layer. The T1(+) and Cr3+ ions were studied for their lumine scence as dopants.
