Tile application of the P-31 NMR spectroscopy is described for the stu
dy of phosphorus containing. compounds, pH and metabolite fluxes throu
gh key enzymes in high energy phosphates metabolism of myocardium in p
hysiological and pathological conditions both in animals and humans. T
he main interest was focused on transmural differences in metabolites
in the myocardium, and biochemical changes which call be studied by th
is method in hypoxia, anoxia, ischaemia, ventricular fibrillation, myo
cardial hypertrophy and hibernation. The main advantage of this method
is the possibility to study myocardial metabolism in real time non-in
vasively and non-destructively. It can be concluded that P-31 NMR spec
troscopy is a modern method which allowed the study of the myocardium
in vitro, in situ and in vivo with a great potential for further appli
cation in experimental work and clinical practice.
