The first ever mass spectrometric observation of CH3IHn+ (n=1-3) ions
is reported following 70 eV electron collision with CH3I at a pressure
above 10(-4) torr. Quantum chemical calculations show that CH3IH+ ion
s are stable and CH3IH2+ and CH3IH3+ ions are at least metastable in t
heir respective ground states. These calculations suggest that protona
tion and hydrogenation reactions are the likely mechanisms for the for
mation of these ions.
