ACTIVITIES OF 3 INVESTIGATIONAL FLUOROQUINOLONES (BAY-Y-3118, DU-6859A, AND CLINAFLOXACIN) AGAINST NEISSERIA-GONORRHOEAE ISOLATES WITH DIMINISHED SUSCEPTIBILITIES TO CIPROFLOXACIN AND OFLOXACIN
Cj. Carlyn et al., ACTIVITIES OF 3 INVESTIGATIONAL FLUOROQUINOLONES (BAY-Y-3118, DU-6859A, AND CLINAFLOXACIN) AGAINST NEISSERIA-GONORRHOEAE ISOLATES WITH DIMINISHED SUSCEPTIBILITIES TO CIPROFLOXACIN AND OFLOXACIN, Antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy, 39(7), 1995, pp. 1606-1608
Between 1 January 1992 and 31 December 1993, our laboratory, as part o
f the Gonococcal Isolate Surveillance Project, found that 39 of 673 is
olates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from one local sexually transmitted di
seases clinic demonstrated decreased susceptibilities to both ciproflo
xacin and ofloxacin. The MICs of BAY y 3118, DU-6859a, and clinafloxac
in at which 90% of the gonococci with decreased susceptibility to cipr
ofloxacin and ofloxacin were inhibited were ah 0.016 mu g/ml, which wa
s eightfold higher than those for ciprofloxacin-susceptible gonococci.
Our report substantiates prior observations that diminished susceptib
ility to one quinolone is often associated with diminished susceptibil
ity to other quinolones.
