Previous rectono-lithostratigraphic subdivisions of the eastern part o
f the Karkonosze-Izera block in the Western Sudetes are critically dis
cussed. The observed outcrop pattern as well as structural and petrolo
gical evidence indicate that the area is composed of four major tecton
ic units intruded by the Variscan Karkonosze granite. Each unit compri
ses different lithostratigraphic sequences. The petrological character
istics, and in particular the mineral chemistry data, from the rocks o
f the SE part of the Karkonosze-Izera block, indicate different PT reg
ional metamorphic paths in different tectonic subdivisions, generally
with HP rocks overlying MP units. The evolution of the Karkonosze-Izer
a block resembles those of metamorphic core complexes. At a late stage
, it underwent uplift and normal faulting related to the Karkonosze gr
anite intrusion in the west and subsidence of the Intra-Sudetic basin
in the east.
