T. Othman et al., ORIENTATIONAL DIFFUSIVITIES MEASUREMENT BY LIGHT-BEATING SPECTROSCOPYFOR A DISK-LIKE THERMOTROPIC NEMATIC PHASE (N-D), Liquid crystals, 18(6), 1995, pp. 839-842
Using a light-beating technique and for an appropriate scattering geom
etry, we have measured separately the orientational diffusivities D-sp
lay and D-twist for an 'hexa-n-alcanoyloxytruxene' (HATX C12H25) sampl
e which exhibits a disk-like thermotropic nematic phase (N-D) between
57 degrees C and 84 degrees C. D-splay and D-twist are about 100 times
weaker than those corresponding to rod-like thermotropic nematics. Th
e deviation can be attributed to higher viscosities eta(splay) and eta
(twist).
